Controller has dependency in internal VMware Gitlab

I'm trying to run the make deploy on a Linux machine without being connected to the VMware VPN and make fails due to no connectivity to gitlab.eng.vmware.com, which is behind the VPN, meaning customers would not be able to follow this approach.
