Guide: display more than one image in a fountain's gallery

This guide explains how to add multiple photos you own to be shown in fountain details, which is implemented with Wikimedia Commons categories. If you want to set the featured image of the fountain (the one that is shown first), then you need to follow another approach: add a featured image to a fountain

Prerequisites

Cases

A: There are already multiple images shown for the fountain in the app

In this case, the Wikimedia Commons category already exists.

  • Find the Wikidata page linked in the fountain details (on water-fountains.org).
  • Identify the category name. The category name is listed under the Commons category statement and/or under other sites:commons.

B: There is only one image shown in the fountain details.

In this case, either the Wikimedia Commons category does not exist or it has not yet been linked to the Wikidata page of the fountain.

  • Search Wikimedia Commons for the category. You can do this with a full text search or by identifying images which should be in the category, and then seeing which categories they are associated to (these are listed at the bottom of the images' page)
  • If you can not find the category, then think of a good name for the category, such as {name of fountain} at {name of location} in {name of city}

1. Take your photos

Take note of the following guidelines:

  • Photos taken in landscape format are displayed better in the application
  • Take your photo from far enough away so that the setting of the fountain is recognisable
  • Do not include (or blur out) person-identifying information in the photo (identifiable faces, license plates, etc.)

2. Upload your photos

The critical point here is to assign a category to your photos. You can add photos to a category either during or after uploading your photos to the category. The approach is a bit different in each case, as explained in this guide: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:How_to_create_new_categories_or_subcategories

3. Link the category to the corresponding Wikidata page

  • A link to the fountain's Wikidata page can be found in the expandable details of the selected fountain.
  • If no Wikidata page for the fountain exists yet, then
    • first do a manual check that the page doesn't exist (if the coordinates are too inaccurate or if the fountain in OpenStreetMap does not link to the wikidata page, then the wikidata page cannot be matched)
    • create the page yourself (guide to be written)
  • On the fountain's Wikidata page, add a statement of type Commons category and for the value, enter the name of the category (log in first if you have an account), e.g. Drachenbrunnen, Villa Tobler
  • Also add the category to the sitelinks of the Wikidata page: under the other sites field, add an entry with name commons and value Category:{category name}, e.g. Category:Drachenbrunnen, Villa Tobler.
  • See this page as an example: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q27230144

4. Verify your changes

  • back in the fountains application, you can verify your change was successful by clicking "preview current data" at the bottom of the fountain details pane.
