It may be beneficial to include some examples of other looper interfaces here for reference. I'll just start with the Ableton Live Looper plugin:

Note: The "then" button:

Determines whether Looper will switch to Play or Overdub after recording the number of bars specified in the Record Length chooser.

Sounds like the DIP switch toggle in the TC Electronics Ditto loopers @abstractmachines mentioned.
