V5 plan

The v5 release is scheduled for 28/4 just before node v12 end of life.

• v5 PR is kept up with the main branch and contains all the required breaking changes
• NPM versions of v5 are released to NPM with the 5.0.0-rc.x version
• on release date a v4 tag will be created from the main branch before v5 branch will be merged to the main branch

The new version breaking changes are the drop of node v12 and mostly deprecation of overexposed or complicated programmatic API.

In case you are using Stylable programmatic API (importing from @stylable/core) then we suggest you check for deprecation warnings in v4, test the alpha NPM releases and inform us of any API change that you need and we haven't provided a proper alternative for.

  • package.json engines>node to >=14.14.0
  • change github workflow node matrix to "16, 14" - (18 is not supported by actions/setup-node@v3)
  • replace deprecated usage of fsrmdirsync with rmSync
• remove core index exports
  • group and mark for deprecation all unpublic exports into index-deprecated.ts in v4 branch
  • remove index-deprecated.ts in v5 branch
  • move internal package API to index-internal.ts and change packages internal imports to @stylable/pkg/dist/index-internal (until Stylable is published with exports fields)
• move all AST mutations to transformer
• remove Meta.rawAst - new version should have sourceAst for the source and targetAst for the transformed (refactor(core)!: removed processed AST from meta #2525)
• Change Stylable signature to use named options (resolve: core: Stylable class should accept an options object #986 ) (commit)
• remove deprecated meta fields (commit)
• remove deprecated exports and public API from processor, transformer, Stylable
• remove SRule
  • selectorAst / isSimpleSelector / selectorType - already unused in v4 and only the deprecation code should be removed
  • mixins
  • stScopeSelector implementations should be moved during the remove AST mutations task
• deprecate custom pseudo-state tag parameter type
• re-classify diagnostics severity - many warnings should be errors (Change resolution warning to Error for next major #1911 )
• visitMetaCSSDependenciesBFS - expose simple API (feat(core): expose meta dependencies API #2440)
• @stylable/cli:
  • no output module type by default (CLI should have no output module type defined by default #1854 )
  • Stylable CLI: be able to create index file and other output formats in the same process. #2470
