JSR 354 has already defined the "CurrencyUnit" and "MonetaryAmount".
They provide reliable methods to work with money and will be part of JDK 9.

Some more info on JavaMoney GitHub Page, also with a RI available for JDKs under 9.

There's a book about the Money API.
