rest-client, which is a dependency of unirest (which is a wonde ruby-client dependency) has multiple vulnerabilities in version 1.6.9, resolved by upgrading to a version >= 1.8.0 . however, the folks 'maintaining' unirest are unresponsive to releasing a new version to address this.

therefore, we should switch to a different rest/http library which is well-maintained.
