Overview:
I write "status" updates using the WordPress for iOS app on my phone while on-the-go. I feel it is too many taps to do so since I have to choose which Post Format I want each time I use the app.

Current workflow:

  • Tap New Post button
  • Choose "Blog Post"
  • Tap "..." (three dots) button on top-right
  • Tap "Post Settings"
  • Tap "Post Format"
  • Choose "Status"
  • Tap "Back"
  • Write post content in the Body area
  • Tap "Publish"

Possible solutions:

A: The app reads the WordPress setting of "Default post format" found within WordPress at Settings > Writting.

B. The app remembers the previously used Post Format. If I chose Status the last time I published using the app, remember that for the next time.

C: Allow a "default" Post Format to be set somewhere within the app or in the app's iOS settings.

@peril-wordpress-mobile - I can't do that! :)

this is an excellent idea! Would allow for other use cases as well - for people who want to do quick video/audio streams exclusively through their blog, for people who write exclusively in any particular format, and for people who use third party post formats. The default should be set at the app level (or blog-level inside the app) so it's consistent.

I'd like to bump this up again. I post via Wordpress iOS every day and it is a feature that I'd really appreciate.

Hi 👋 @cdevroe! I tested the following with a WordPress.com hosted site as well as a self-hosted non-WordPress.com site connected to Jetpack, and the app matched the behavior for solution "A" above.

Let me know if I'm mistaken somewhere, but this is what I did:

  1. On a WordPress site with a theme installed that supports post formats, select a new default post format in Settings -> Writing from the WordPress Dashboard
  2. In WPiOS, restart the app or pull to refresh on the "My Site" view to sync up this change
  3. Start a new post and go to the Post Settings view, and observe the Post Format setting

Could I ask what theme you're running and how your site is hosted?

Thanks!

@twstokes Thank you for replying. I just tried the steps you recommended. I went into WordPress site, Settings > Writing, and re-saved the Post Format as Status as default (just in case). I quit the iOS app, opened it, and pulled to refresh the My Site settings. And it does not show that Post Format is set as "Status" by default.

My site is self-hosted at cdevroe.com

I would love for this to work so please let me know anything you'd like me to do to debug.

Thanks for the info @cdevroe! One bit I added to my comment a little late is that the self-hosted site I tested was connected to Jetpack (the free tier), which means the app will communicate through another set of APIs that will provide a better experience.

If you haven't already, all you need to do is:

  1. Set up Jetpack on your site and link it up to your WordPress.com user
  2. Log in to WPiOS using your WordPress.com user rather than your self-hosted URL / credentials

@twstokes OK! I will try this tomorrow morning and get back with you. I do appreciate the help!

Once I confirm this... we should close this ticket!!

@twstokes This morning I can confirm that you are right! With JetPack enabled and by removing my site from the iOS app and re-adding it by logging in via my WordPress.com account, it works!

I will say, it is disappointing that someone would need to install JetPack to have this work. I realize JetPack provides a lot of value for many, many websites - but having your WordPress blogs settings be reflected in the iOS app doesn't seem like it should be one of them. Or, at least that it shouldn't be the only way to have this work.

Those are just my .2. I am very glad that it works.
