Before creating

  • This is NOT a gameplay feature from Civ VI, BNW, or outside - see Roadmap
  • This is NOT a gameplay feature from Vanilla Civ V or from G&K - If so, it should be a comment in Missing features from Civ V - G&K #4697

Problem Description

There are a few things that are hard to casually see in regards to units. This is mostly focused on air units, due to the number of them in a single square.

Issues:

  • I usually attack with the lower level units first to level them, but there's no way to easily see which bomber has a lower level.
  • There's no way to easily see how many attacks a unit has left this turn. After a bomber levels, they can move after attacking, so they don't gray out, making it hard to know which bomber in a city hasn't attacked yet.
  • Moving a stack of planes around is a pain, requiring a bunch of clicking.
  • Hard to tell bombers and fighters apart. (I play on my phone, so the icons are already pretty small)

Desired Solution

Some ideas around UI display

  • Include 1 star around the perimeter of a unit's icon for each level it has, making it easy to see rank. Alternatively, just put a number over the icon somewhere.
  • Separate color fade or overlay to the icon when a unit has no more attacks, but can still move. Alternatively, a number of attacks remaining over the icon would work for this, too.
  • The Fighter and Bomber icons look very similar, and when asleep the sleep icon covers the little bomb, making them hard to tell apart. Suggest flipping the Fighter icon so it is angled upper left to lower right. Could also flip the Stealth Bomber and rotate the triplane and great war bomber icons so the angles are consistent.

Unit groups:

  • An idea to make planes easier to manage and move around would be to allow grouping them. Once grouped, a group of 6 bombers (for example) would act like a single unit. Moving the group of them would move all of them, and the group would have 6 (to 12) attacks, allowing them to be made in easy succession. Movement would be limited to the shortest range. Attack range would be limited to the furthest range that hasn't attacked yet.
  • Another use for unit groups could be grouping a civilian unit with a military unit. For example, a settler and a knight have different speeds, making it hard to send a knight to protect a settler when traveling long distances.

Additional Context

Just some ideas that came to me while playing. Figured I'd add them here in case they resonate with anyone else.
