Hi

Instead of straight lines, I am getting some bizarre characters. And I am also getting them on start of each line as you can see in the image below

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Perhaps something to do with your terminal encoding?
Depending on the OS, but I'd start here just to get an overview of what this could be about https://www.tecmint.com/set-system-locales-in-linux/
