This plugin looks awesome! That got me thinking, do you think it's possible to extend/apply this to other file types?

i suppose it can be done. i originally based this plugin on an existing one used to import css files. but at the moment i do not plan on pursuing this idea, i prefer just having a set of plugins that capture what can be imported
