I'm seeing this error on 2 other projects of mine today. Up to now, contourpy (a dependency of matplotlib) was only available on PyPI and the latest version required numpy<2.0, so we were not actually testing against numpy dev. It seems like this changed and now contourpy has nightly wheels on https://pypi.anaconda.org/scientific-python-nightly-wheels/simple/ without the pin. As a consequence, we do get numpy dev at runtime, and any module built against numpy 1.x is incompatible, causing an ImportError. I'll dig further down to see if we can solve this.
