There's bit-rotted support for loading arbitrary textures according to semantics in the HLSL effect file.
It ought to be reasonably simple to reactivate this with some testing to achieve textured backgrounds as per the commented code in the default effect.

No real need has arisen, gradients can be approximated by a stop table in effect.
