ValheimRaft V2: Raft/boat speed is very, very slow #97
Comments
Here's my client and server Raft mod config: After looking closer at this, maybe I'll change some of these default propulsion values. |
Restarted the server with new Propulsion settings and the sailing speed is better. I guessed at optional settings that might "feel better"; they are not perfect yet. Maybe this bug turns into a request for "better" defaults? ...or it can be closed without adjustment. Whatever works. I definitely think a "ship" like what I built is far too slow with defaults. |
Certainly open to feedback. The sailing mechanics were meant to be tweaked later, but they were not looked at. If you have recommendations or config default you think are balanced, please post them. I'll add it to the mod defaults. The config can let you do most things and balance it they way you need, but yes it's not ideal especially as you add items to boats items calculate into ship speed. There are toggles for weight calculations - you can disable it completely for containers. |
Long term sailing and other speed mechanics need a simple interface showing how much sail is required to reach a speed. And likely add a lowest and highest threshold that aren't as punishing. |
Gotcha. Here are the settings I adjusted things to. They feel like the sailing from ValheimRaft V1 to me. My group build similar ships in V1 and the new V2 ship now feels very similar to those settings. Side note: Extreme turning right/left does not work very well. It barely turns the vessel. If I slightly turn, stop, back up, slightly keep turning that direction (basically a multi-point turn), it works. This is challengind, but does not feel completely broken. It would be nice if turning turns harder into that pitch/direction. All good. Current settings that feel pretty good to me: I think I'm good to close this topic out though. I am unblocked and moving around. Ty! |
Ps - [Avoiding spoiler, so being generic in describing this next part] Be careful where you take a boat made of WOOD! Maybe consider the IRON hull/parts option, considering the hours it can take to build this type of ship. |
I don't think people care too much about spoilers of Ashlands when the reality is if it does damage wood parts then most boats would not have a good time; I'm sure if that's the case people would like to know then find out the hard way and most likely roll back their saves after the fact. I was trying to find information about this mod and Ashlands but there is none about whether or not the wood boats would be fine. If you could clarify that, that would be great. I've already built my ship out of wood, but I want to know how to make it Ashlands proof so I'm probably gonna build one for Ashlands, |
Hmm for small boats this config seems extremely unbalanced. Testing with larger boats soon. |
Will be keeping the older config. I disabled chest weight calcs by default though. Ill keep this feedback in mind for when sailing logic is updated again to be simpler. |

Result:
The sailing speed works in the 3 gears (1 rowing, 2 sailing-1, 3 sailing-2), but it is really slow. All 3 gears go around the same exact speed. If there is no wind (expected), gears 2 and 3 will not work (need wind to sail of course). I have tested other mods that improve sailing speed, but there is no effect (raft speed is still the same).
