Add hook or option for user-positioning of axis scales

At the moment, the positioning of axis scales is hardcoded. It might be good to have a hook or option for the user to manually position the axis scales.

Another option is to provide a 'helper' function to place the tick scaling and return a handle, so that the user can move the label if they want.
