When pushing Ctrl-L to jump to a line, it'd be very convenient if once could just type $ (a'la vim/sed/et al.) to jump to the last line.

why not use the keybinding actions made for that purpose?
Ctrl-Home and Ctrl-End serve exactly that purpose. (Though Ctrl-End jumps to the end of the last line.)
