This creates some conflcts with __call method.
As jsonRpcClient is used as client->call($method, $params), then __call() is invoked with $method = call.
Strange this hasn't popup already.

Example: $client->call('get_session_key', ...) turns into $method = call instead of $method = 'get_session_key'

By any chance, a solution supporting the old style would be much appreciated.

Is it ok to add a ticket and a fix for this? Bringing back the old call method

Go ahead.

{
return $this->__call($method, $params);
}

Will all these adjustments be backwards compatible? If I am updating an older LS 3 system which makes use of JSON RPC and API calls, will there be any issues?

They should be. Otherwise I'll revert the commit.

Didn't have time to test so much.

jsonRPCServer.php update seems very light. More clear error (real http error) : think it's better :) and can not broke existing working system
