What started as an open-source clean-room implementation of the Microblaze in 2004, ended up becoming more than just a clone. Incidentally, it was never meant to be a drop-in replacement nor a clone.

All it was meant to do was to be binary compatible. It would use the same instruction set but feature an entirely different architecture. It succeeded in doing this and the latest revision of the core is multi-threaded.

Now, it is time to move onto the next-generation core. There are a number of new exciting features planned and this will be available soon.
