Awesomeness Version 4. Flexible Real Time, Federated, HTTP-based Protocol.

What will hopefully result This application specifies a generic message storage system, the way multiple federated servers communicate to each other, and a HTTP based system for communication to agents. Messages contain text content and three metadata objects, data, acl and private. Updates are propagated around the system in real time, and so are search queries.

Definitions A Federation server stores messages, passes them to other servers, authorizes Agents and obeys the commands sent by Agents. Agents are web-accessible servers that can represent users or "bots" which act on a message programatically.

Client Design The protocol is designed to be flexible enough for many potential use cases. The only difference is how the agents treat the messages and what kinds of queries are sent.

I would love to create an end user application powered by this protocol. Something that works as a social network and a means of communication. Think Facebook and it's Mail system or Gmail+Buzz.

Each user has a profile, it's actually just a message.

A federation server can run a query on messages by a certain user on that user's federation server (since every message accessed/modified by a user will be mirrored by the federation server). That list would be the activity list, and can be aggregated into a single stream.

Each message contains an "author" metadata attribute. The author is specifically a URL pointing to the user's profile, which contains more information, such as an avatar and full name.

Append /requests to the user-URL will be the name of the Requests message, an public write-only message. Anyone can write the message they want the user to become part of. Once shown to the user, the user has an option to view the message and add it to their private inbox.

Messages include a private state, this private state is only accessible to the user and always kept within the boundaries of the user's federation server. It exists for all messages and contains information such as read/unread state.

Messages can embed other messages, leading to nested conversations.

A type of message called a "gadget" could exist, which would contain a metadata object called "url". The client would load that page in an iframe and make a postMessage based API available to the embedded page so it can edit it's own metadata.

What happened to versions 1, 2 and 3? I killed them. There were several issues, they were profoundly limited. None of them supported persistent storage, and were pretty dependent on Node.

Protocol Design Goals

  • It should be easily portable, and it should be possible to make one in PHP without .htaccess or mod_rewrite

  • It should be HTTP-ONLY. Also, no long-polling, hanging-gets. Pub/Sub is only available to web-accessible domains. The purpose of a user agent proxy is to convert these actions into WebSockets, Hanging-Gets, XMPP, etc. (Rationale: It makes the protocol simpler, and allows fully functioning implementations to be written for Google App Engine and in PHP)

Reference Implementation

If I were actually making this, then this is what I would use.

  • Node.JS For the Win.

  • MongoDB, because all we really need is a searchable persistent hash table. However, of time of writing, I'm not aware if it's possible to set a list of queries and have a callback trigger whenever a matching search is identified. However, since scalability isn't absolutely critical to this implementation, having a list of queries and running them every time an operation is sent can't be that bad.

Protocol Specification

I don't have any code yet, because I might actually just abandon this project again, it's pretty complex and there's gonna be some other interesting developments like Diaspora*, Twitter, Facebook, Google Wave (in a box) which have much larger development teams. Either way, if anyone thinks this is a good idea, they should probably know what my ideas were.

  • Everything is treated like a message.

    • The medium is the message. I just wanted to stick this quote in here.

    • Exception: Registration. I have NO CLUE how to handle this. The thing is that everything else a federation server does isn't user-facing. Except registration sort of needs to be.

    • Searches are also messages, or at least they're treated like messages. Really, messages are just objects that can be subscribed to, undergo changes (and the changes are stored as deltas in history) and contain metadata in the form of private, data and acl optionally with a text attribute. So search is just a special dynamic message that can behave like any other, Playback can be used to see what items were in a search in the past (however, note that the playback will only include the number of items in the inbox, not the state of the messages referred to by the search).

    • Inboxes/Folders are messages. It's a more normal type of message called a Digest. It is unreadable to the world and only readable to the user who owns it unless it's explicitly exposed. A search is also the digest type of message (however a search obviously has some more magical properties). The data object is filled with a list of IDs of messages and nothing else.

    • Conversations don't exist. There's no abstract object that contains sub-messages. There are only normal messages. Actually, this is mostly a lie.

    • Root Messages. They're basically normal messages. The only difference is that its the original root of a message. You might ask why bother? The simple answer is that when you're searching, you probably find a specific message but not in context of parents. Each message has a metadata attribute that refers to the root message so someone can easily find the root.

    • Messages are Messages. This is the greatest and most brilliant design decision that greatly departs from the usual design of all systems.

    • This is actually more of a use-case thing, but you can fork a subthread simply by de-referencing it from the parent and recursively setting the root to the new message.

    • Messages have URLs, and there are certain important things regarding formatting.

    • Now, here's the weird thing. You're never going to actually access that URL. Instead, you're going to access the host URL via a POST filled with JSON and the actual ID as part of the {id: ""} JSON request body.

    • You include an Authorization HTTP header for signatures (host signature OR agent signatures) with your request and possibly abuse the HTTP Host header with an actual URL.

Here's how your server should probably handle requests, or at least this is how Awesomeness3 worked.

  1. When your server gets a request, classify the type of signature. If it's from another federation server, continue to F1. If it's from an Agent, go to A1

Federation (F)

  1. Since it's from federation, you already know that the target is your server. So make sure that the target URL is your's or else explode.
  2. Subscribe the requesting federation server to updates to the target message.
  3. Go to L1

Agent (A)

  1. Check the target URL, if it's local, head on over to L1. If it's external, go to X1.
  2. Subscribe the agent to the message.

Local (L)

  1. Apply the delta to the local message.
  2. Propagate changes to servers that subscribe.

External (X)

  1. Go send the delta to the actual target server.
