Perl6 String::CRC32
===================

http://github.com/cosimo/perl6-string-crc32/

Pure Perl6 version of String::CRC32 from Perl5.
Based on CPAN version 1.4 by Sönke J. Peters.

Current status (2010/08/02)
===========================

Needed for Cache::Memcached.
Works fine, maybe slower than the Perl5 XS :)

I would prefer it to be implemented as a method of buf8:
augment class buf8 {
method Int crc32 { ... }
};

So this module should not be named String::* as it applies to buf8 instead of Str.

@CRC_TABLE should be defined as readonly with ::= as it is a constant:

Should probably apply to a Buf instead.
To apply to a Str, an explicit encoding should be given as a CRC is defined only on a specific binary representation.

my $crcinit = 0;
my $crc = $crcinit +^ 0xFFFFFFFF;

say 'Init crc calc.';

for $c.split('') {

Buf has no split method and it is not iterable. Here is a suggestion:
for (map { $c[$_] }, ^$c.elems) -> $byte {

my $char = $_.ord;
$crc = (($crc +> 8) +& 0x00FFFFFF) +^ @CRC_TABLE[ ($crc +^ $char) +& 0xFF ];
}

$crc +^= 0xFFFFFFFF;

return $crc;
}

=head1 NAME
String::CRC32 - Calculate 32-bit CRC checksum of strings
=head1 SYNOPSIS
use v6;
use String::CRC32;
my $string = 'Hello, world';
my $crc32 = String::CRC32.crc32($string);
=head1 DESCRIPTION
The CRC32 module calculates CRC sums of 32 bit lenghts.
It generates the same CRC values as ZMODEM, PKZIP, PICCHECK and many others.
=head1 METHODS
=head2 C<crc32($string)>
Calculates and returns a CRC32 checksum of a string.
For an example, see the SYNOPSIS.
Example:
use v6;
use String::CRC32;
my $string = 'Hello, world';
say String::CRC32.crc32($string);
# prints '3885672898'

Test should apply to Buf objects.
