Tips

Below are some tips for ScrapBook X, and some of them are also available on legacy ScrapBook and ScrapBook Plus.

Edit a web page directly

You can use "Edit before save" in the dropdown menu of the ScrapBook X toolbar button to edit a web page directly.

If the button is not shown, add it from View > Toolbar > Customize.

Search in a specific folder

Right-click on a folder and click "Open Manage window", a window with data items only in the folder will show. You can perform a search on it and the search result will be limited to the folder.

Read you ScrapBook from the cloud

Use Tool > Output HTML tree to generate an HTML page listing all ScrapBook items, and now you can host the whole ScrapBook directory on a server or a free webhost service such as the Public folder of Dropbox, and browse the data items with a browser.

Check the "Automatically output tree as HTML when data is changed" Option if you want the tree to be generated automatically when you modify something.

Move the entire ScrapBook to a mobile phone

For an Android mobile phone, you can copy the ScrapBook directory to your mobile phone after output HTML tree and browse it with a browser.

Note that some browsers such as Chrome have a security restriction and will break partial functionality of the output tree page. Selecting a browser without such a limitation is recommended, such as Firefox Android or Dolphin Browser.

You can also use a Sync service such as FolderSync or Syncthing to automatically sync the ScrapBook directory between multiple devices.

Search your ScrapBook without ScrapBook installed

Visit the page generated by Output HTML page and click on the magnifier button at the right of the "ScrapBook" title to enter the search page. You can then search your ScrapBook using a keyword.

NOTE: The search engine needs to load the whole cache.rdf file via AJAX before a search, and this may cause a large amount of network traffic.

The AJAX connection may also be forbidden by some browser's security limitations. Some Configuration may be required to get it work.

Hashtag

ScrapBook X doesn't currently support tags. You can write a "hash tag" such as "#my_key_word" in the comment of an item and perform a search to reach the items of a specific topic.

Special about:config entries

Many ScrapBook X options are recorded in the user preferences, which are available in about:config. Some of them are even "hidden" features that are only available there, such as (omitted prefix extensions.scrapbook. for brevity):

  • data.rdfBackupKeepDays

  • data.rdfBackupRemoveLimit

  • fulltext.sitePagesLimit

  • fulltext.updateSizeThreshold

  • fulltext.updateTimeThreshold

  • highlighter.style.*

  • key.domEraser.*

  • note.fontsize

  • save.default.linkUrlFilters

  • save.default.serializeFilename

  • save.default.recordRemovedAttr

  • save.default.recordRemovedAttr

  • save.default.recordSkippedUrl

  • save.default.removeIntegrity
