gitorious puppet module

This configures gitorious on a Debian Squeeze server, but it will probably work with Ubuntu or newer Debian versions. SSL is not supported right now -- pull requests are welcomed.

It differs from the many recipes and puppet modules I found in the following ways:

• Files bundled with the module are kept to a minimum. We either download, or modify downloaded files to a huge extent. There are only four files bundled, one of which isn't even necessary.

• Nothing gets compiled. Use existing packages.

• Prefer existing Debian packages -- for instance, the perfectly good and up-to-date stompserver.

• Use rvm to handle Ruby needs, so that gitorious finicky requirements is kept isolated from the rest of the server. I depend on many other modules here, and even a few local classes. I provide these local classes as text in this document. The outside requirements are:

• dcsobral/apache -- easily replaceable

• camptocamp/apt -- actually, you only need Puppet >= 2.6.7

• camptocamp/common -- one definition only

• camptocamp/mysql -- essential, but replaceable

• blt04/rvm -- essential

• dcsobral/puppet-users -- not needed, you can remove it

There are two local classes I include, git and production. Here is the source code for them:

Now, there's a single class, gitorious, which has a bunch of parameters used mostly on the gitorious configuration template. You should look at the configuration template -- I have customized it for my own needs, and so should you. With luck, most of the stuff you want to customize will be available as a parameter of the gitorious class.

Here are the parameters of the gitorious class:

• gitorious_host: server name on the URL you'll be using
• ssh_fingerprint: ssh fingerprint of the server
• dbpassword: password for the gitorious user on the mysql database
• cookie_secret: use apg -d -m 64 to generate this one
• gitorious_admin_email: e-mail for everything related to gitorious itself
• server_admin_email: e-mail for the web server administrator
• locale: look at config/locales for supported ones; defaults to "en"
• default_license: look at the template for default ones, or add one yourself; defaults to "Other/Proprietary License"
• useActiveMQ: whether it uses stomp or activemq; defaults to false and it is untested with true

Running this will execute a "bundle install", which can take a long time. For this reason, I have set a timeout of 10 minutes, plus three tries to get it done. Hopefully, it won't do something weird and just get stuck, but it will take how long it takes.

Because of the way mysql is configured, this configuration must be run at least twice. The first run should have everything configured except database, and the related rake tasks. It also does not configure the gitorious services, since they probably won't work either anyway. However, that assumes you already have Puppet version >= 2.6.7, which is not the case for standard Squeeze.

This module installs the backports, but you still need something else doing the update to a newer version of Puppet. Best experience is to just have a newer version of Puppet beforehand. Otherwise, you need to ensure somehow that Puppet will update itself in the presence of a newer version.

After it finally installed everything, you'll still need to create the admin user. It looks like this is scriptable, but creating all this has taken its toll. You can create the admin user with this:

About the layout: I tried to keep most things in one file, so one can find dependencies more easily. I moved out a few things that have many line and are not particularly interesting dependency-wise. The config class is probably the one exception, but it was rather long and mostly uninteresting.

It seems you can avoid that by having stuff on .bashrc that selects the proper ruby/gemset.
