DDS Notebook Ideas

Basic approach

Use map of Edinburgh as the scaffolding, with different layers and aspects contributed by different data sets and visualisations.

Example data:

  • density of businesses vs residential
  • traffic accidents
  • transport options
  • air quality
  • reviews e.g. from Yelp, Foursquare etc
  • subjective questionnaire data

Visualisations:

  • Point location
  • Tree maps
  • Chloropleth maps
  • Heat maps
  • Voronoi tesselations

Topics to be covered (if possible)

These aren't in any particular order

  1. overview of tabular data; sorting, grouping, summing
  2. data cleaning
  3. how to find and store data
  4. personal, sensitive, non-personal; DPA
  5. open data, copyright, licensing, FOI
  6. simple statistics (mean, median, mode; standard deviation; sampling)
  7. overview of graphs and charts and how to make them
  8. geocoded data; coordinate systems
  9. handling GPS track data
  10. putting data on a map
  11. types of map (e.g. chloropleth, heat map)
  12. consuming and processing data from Twitter API
  13. data visualisation tools
