Ontologies and Vocabularies
GloBI makes a best effort to link terms like taxa, body parts, physiological state and life history stage to existing ontologies and/or vocabularies.
Ideally the datasets would provide machine readable term IRIs for terms used. However, many available species interaction datasets do not provide a link to ontologies and use labels only (e.g. human readable text), GloBI provides a pretty basic mapping to ontologies to help make the terms machine readable.
GloBI is using various taxonomies for taxonomic matching (see Taxonomy Matching), Uberon for body parts, life history stage and physiological state, EnvO for all things habitat/environment and Relations Ontology.
Please submit an issue if you have ideas on how to improve the links from terms used in existing datasets into curated ontologies/ vocabularies.
