In this update we’ve focussed on the following areas:
Making it easier to get to the data you need effectively
We’ve re-arranged some screens and added data to other screens to surface the data that you use most often. Much of this work is based on feedback we received in workshops last year, as well as feedback we get through email and the helpdesk. There are many small changes under this heading, but to highlight a couple of the more obvious changes:
- On the licence details screen the licence properties are now the first thing displayed
- Information about the Hybrid OA status of journals added to the title lists in packages
- Ability to record Subscription identifiers so you can keep a record of information like vendor references for subscriptions
- Ability to record contact information for licences (e.g. email, address, telephone number etc.)
Streamlining workflows
We’ve added functionality or exposed existing functionality in more convenient locations to streamline workflows and make managing your data easier. This includes:
- Ability to Unlink Packages from Subscriptions
- Ability to Link a Licence to a Subscription from the Licence Details screen
- Abiility to create a copy of a licence directly from a licence details screen rather than having to go back to the licences list
Improvements to Licences
This release has some substantial improvements to the licences functionality in KB+. As well as some data and workflow improvements (mentioned above) we’ve also:
- Where there is an ONIX-PL (machine readable) version of a licence in KB+ we have:
- Added a much enhanced and improved ‘Licence Comparison’ tool. This allows you to compare the full details of licences including terms such as definitions of Authorised Users, and all usage term information. This comparison tool is accessed through the menu option Institutions->Licence Comparison Tool (ElCat)
- Used the same enhanced view when you click to view the ONIX-PL version of the licence from an individual licence details page - in this case we will automatically display a comparison to the latest Jisc Model Licence information
- Added the ability to compare the simpler KB+ Licence properties between two or more licences - where the full comparison is too detailed you can compare licences simply based on their KB+ key properties - this is accessed from the "Institutions->{your institution name}->Compare Licences (KB+ Licence Properties)" menu option
- Added Export options to individual licences and lists of licences. These exports include the ability to export the list of journal titles covered by the licence(s) selected. This means it is (for example) now possible to export a list of all journals which allow Walk-in access
- Added the option to have a publicly viewable page of the licence terms that apply to a specific journal title. This could be used to make licence terms visible to academics or students, or simply library staff who don’t normally use KB+ (e.g. enquiry desk staff). This view is not made public by default, but can be switched to public view if you wish. The view is also designed so that it can easily be linked from other places (such as public journal A-Z lists or Link Resolver screens)
New and improved Public Exports
The public exports page can be used by anyone to download package information from KB+ - this is used (for example) by vendors who load information from KB+ into their own knowledgebases and systems. This has been improved with:
- A completely new search interface allowing you to search for only current packages
- New export formats including support for the KBART II format
Better data management tools
Behind the scenes in this release we’ve added tools to help manage the underlying data in the system. This should mean that the information in KB+ continues to improve in quality and quantity!
