The MakerPass project is an access control system for ingress, egress, vending, machine tools and more.
The following are typical components in a MakerPass installation.
There is one Authentication Server per MakerPass install. The server (local or remote) runs an application instance of a common authentication protocol. Example protocols would be these
A Node Manager communicates with multiple Wiegand Boards using RS485 (a differential serial protocol.) There is usually one Node Manager per room, or connected with as many as 32 Wiegand Boards. A Node Manager is usually an inexpensive Ethernet or WiFi-enabled embedded computer, such as a BeagleBone Black or Raspberry Pi.
There is one Wiegand Board at each access point or item (door, machine tool, vending machine). These boards provide the low-voltage control for a multitude of inputs and outputs.
These are commonly used INPUT items with a Wiegand Board:
- Wiegand card reader / pinpad
- Current sensor (to detect machine tool motor state)
- Key switch (as override for access item)
These are commonly used OUTPUT items with a Wiegand Board:
- Electric door strike
- Indicator light
- Relay
