Here's a simple RSS reader implementation using AJAX and "vanilla" JavaScript I wrote back in 2006 for this XML.com article: RSS and AJAX: A Simple News Reader. There are probably much better implementations available today, but I've added the code to GitHub in case anyone finds it useful.
