============= the purpose of this project ================
since the 'ogre samples' (i like to call them examples from now on) are bad in regard to
educational purpose i wrote some exsamples on my own. 

with these sets of examples you are welcome to experiment directly. you can alter the code
and instantly see the effects, just explore some cmake magic and the code of course.
use my examples for whatever you like them to but watch out, i've used some third party
examples and i'm not sure which license covers their code. most were from the ogre wiki.

anyway i would like to share them with you. if you have comments, please write
an email to me: Joachim Schiele <js@lastlog.de>

you are free to do with the examples i wrote for whatever purpose you want, i
put them (that is only the code i've written) into public domain. 

  please note: i also use libraries which DO have different license terms as ogre/ois 
               or boost or network libraries, please take that also into account!

final note: 
  - this examples should be cross platform (win/lin/mac). 
    i guess minor adaption might be needed in some cases.
  - all my examples worked at my elitebook 8530w using nVidia Corporation G96M [Quadro FX 770M]
    with x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-190.53-r1, see screenshots found in the examples
  - mars-1k.png and jupiter-1k.png texture taken from: http://orsa.sourceforge.net/download.html
    and renamed

============= how to build the examples ================

optionally you can use a build directly, in that case you can set a symlink like this:

cmake .. (note that it is '..' not '.')

============= the examples in detail ================
all examples use cmake and a minimized set of CustomMedia files as textures and other stuff. most
are copied from the ogre examples and then extended, so what is this about:

ninja - basically tutorial 2

ninja-camera - moveable camera but basically the same as ninja
  - use the keyboard/mouse to move the camera
  - LMB to toggle the light source

ninja-camera-gamepad-sdl - fly around using the mouse/keyboard or joystick/gamepad (using sdl joy support)
  - you can only query the state of the joystick on each framelistener update (unbuffered input) which has drawbacks:
    - no event interface (since the 'SDL Event interface' can only be used if SDL has an active main event loop, 
      which is obviously not the case here, it can't be used that way)
    - since we don't have an event interface we have a keypress event every frame, we have to track keyPress
      and keyRelese on our own, see how it is done for the light using button0state bool variable
    - using combos as pressing two keys at the same time can be tracked as well but is a bit more complex
      and not done in this example
    - input of the gamepad is dependant on the fps of the gpu which is annoying
    - some buttons on the ps3 controller are pressure sensitive, with SDL this could be used but is not
      in the scope of this example 
  - there is still some 'OIS joystick' code from the ogre example framework included but NOT used
  - WARNING: i consider this code a hack and more as a prove of concept using sdl. please refactor this code
             for your own project and use classes to handle the events, probably better do not use SDL at all 
             but use OIS instead. there is an OIS sdl backend, maybe this would be a good way to use sdl 
             indirectly while having nice interfaces to work with
  - WARNING: check for permissions of /dev/input/js0 and use jstest coming with: games-util/joystick-20060731
             on gentoo (for instance)

ninja-camera-gamepad-ois - fly around using the mouse/keyboard or joystick/gamepad (using ois joy support)
  - this example didn't work every good with my gamepad, i had some stuttering with the axes moving the cam?!
    however: it worked and it might be my gamepad or any other random issue i couldn't fix
  - unlike the sdl example this is using a (buffered input) system with callbacks
    you can do all you want with both systems so just pick the one you think which results in better code design
  - please check your permissions of /dev/input/eventX where X is you gamepad device 
    (OIS does not use the /dev/input/js0 device at all, at least for ois 1.2), use the ois/demos/ConsoleApp to
    evaluate the funcionality of the gamepad using OIS (you can find this nice program in the OIS source distribution). 
    -> you might have to download ois-1.2 and compile it on your own dependent on your package manager - 
    at least on gentoo this was not part of the package of ois

mars - different texture mapping techniques for a sphere 
  - there are three spheres:
    - mars:          this one is textured just fine
    - big jupiter:   wrongly textured: using sphere.mesh with a custom texture
                     and move the camara since it is a motion issue mainly
    - small jupiter: this one is textured just fine

---- ogre and shaders ----
now we will have a look at how ogre handles shaders:

 1. shaders are used together with materials, so first thing is to create a material which uses a shader
 2. the shaders are given as sourcecode but are compiled on demand which means that
 3. you do not need to compile the shaders using cgc (for cg shaders) manually but you 'can'.
 4. cg shaders are compiled right before the material is actually used which means that the load time 
    of ogre might increase (not much though). the point is: you don't precompile them compared to 
    libOgre or your application using libOgre in the first place!
 5. please note: there are several card types with different levels of shader support. not all shaders
    will work everywhere. there is hlsl (windows) and glsl (linux) and cg (both - but nvidia only).

    one example using cgc (with linux):

         as you can see we get some asm output with 0 errors (see above the code)

         when you see this, the shader did compile successfully! the -profile switch
         is very important and it has to match your system (gpu specs) to make it work
         since this is only a software compiler (independant of the gpu) it might compile
         on your platform but the shader might not be usable as your gpu might not support
         it - just keep that in mind!
  7. again - you do not need to compile the shader to use it in ogre as it is done automatically on
     runtime. but it can be helpful for shader authors to see if it compiles without having to start
     ogre every time.
  8. issues with the rings:
     - if there are no rings at all (compare the output of the shader using examples to the mars-rings 
       example) then it is not working 
     - the rings should actually be drawn in green (if they are white, the shader does not work)
  9. (see Ogre.log or the console output when starting the program)
     common errors when running ogre when wanting to use shaders are: 
     - Pass 0: Vertex program glow_vs_cg cannot be used - compile error.
       which basically means your code can't be compiled
     - 0(1) : warning C7557: OpenGL does not allow Cg-style semantics
       when you try to copy the code of a cg based shader and want to use it as glsl without converting it 
       properly - the way it is expected (write glsl code NOT cg code)
     - WARNING: material cg/glow has no supportable Techniques and will be blank. Explanation: 
       Pass 0: Vertex program glow_vs_cg cannot be used - not supported.
       this error probably indicates that you want to use a cg program but you did not add support
       in ogre for using cg in general. you get this error once per material.
        - just compile ogre with cg support (requires media-gfx/nvidia-cg-toolkit on gentoo)
        - also you need to modify the plugins.cfg to use cg
          Plugin=Plugin_CgProgramManager.so     <- add this to plugins.cfg and restart your application

mars-rings - drawing line segments to approximate a circle
  - this example is not using shaders but both later example build on this source base so you can
    easily spot the differences in code (which are minor)!
  - there are several rings and beginning at the inner ring the number of segments used to approximate
    a round circle increases. steppings used are:  4,16,32,64,128.

mars-rings-cg-shader - shader using cg
  - check your plugins.cfg to have Plugin=Plugin_CgProgramManager.so, also check if cg support has loaded
    which can be found out either by looking at stdout/stderr or into Ogre.log
  - check if the shader has been loaded, if something went wrong there is a error about not beeing able
    to load the shader once per material script referencing a cg shader
  - the rings should actually be drawn in green (if they are white, the shader does not work)
  - the rings' colors should pulsate - that means the color intensity should be modulated by a sinus and realtime

mars-rings-glsl-shader - shader using glsl
  - this is basically the same code but instead of using cg we use glsl here
  - both the cg code and the glsl code is included in this project
  - again, if the rings are white it does not work and you should check your configuration
