After a quick discussion with @miketaylr about this, I put together some ideas regarding adding a wizard to the reporter extensions. Thoughts?

Why add a wizard to the webcompat.com reporter extensions?

  • The reporter is available for anyone to download
    • Make it easy for first time users to understand what good bugs look like.
    • How users can provide actionable information in the bug report
  • This can be a good entry point for contribution, with very little background information a new contributor can get started
  • Direct video chat with karlcow

Proposed Process

Entry point

  • User is browsing the web
  • Contributor is testing popular sites in their favourite browser

Site issue is identified

  • User encounters what they think is a potential issue

Click the reporter icon

  • User is presented with a wizard style UI dropping down from the toolbar
  • Mo wizards mo problems

Wizard Step 1

  • {{Description of what makes a web compatibility bug}}
  • Screenshot examples in a slider menu of web compatibility bugs
    • Description of example screenshot
  • Would you like to report an issue with this website?

Wizard Step 2

  • If bugs have been reported for that site,
  • {{List open bugs for that site}}
  • If you aren’t sure these open reports match your bug, continue
  • Give option to skip to create a bug report or go to step 3

Wizard Step 3

  • What makes a good bug report?
    • Explain how you were able to get the issue to appear. Knowing the exact steps you took makes it easier for others to spot the problem.
    • If you return to that website, does the issue happen each time?
    • Did you try the website in another browser? List the browsers you saw this problem in.
  • How can you get notifications?
  • How can you help?
  • Create a bug report button

Possible web compatibility bug description:
A layout, feature or some content of a website that works as expected in one browser, but does not in another.

Is this still something that folks think should be designed? Are there any changes to make?
