Some points to hit:

HTML5 doctype: <!DOCTYPE html>
The lang attribute, i.e. <html lang="en"> (or whatever the primary language is)
No XHTML self-closing tags: <br>, <img>, <link>, etc.
HTML5 semantics: header, nav, main, section, figure, etc.
A template for open graph meta tags or SEO more generally?
Backwards compatibility: html5shiv, etc.

Maybe reference HTML5 Boilerplate?
