Sony BVM D Driver

The Sony BVM-D driver can control any Sony BVM D-series monitor over RS-485. You will need a USB-to-RS485 adapter or cable, and likely a special homemade adapter cable.

Making the Adapter Cable

To connect a USB-to-RS485 to the DE-9 connector on the BVM, you will more than likely require an adapter cable be made to route the proper signals to the proper pins.

Basic Situations

If your USB-to-RS485 adapter has a break out, you will simply need to create a cable with a DE-9 connector on one end and the other connected to the RS-485 break out.

If your USB-to-RS485 adapter has a DE-9 connector, you will need to create a cable with DE-9 connector on both ends.

In both situations, using a break-out DE-9 connector on both ends will make this easy. The monitor side will require a female connector. You can use a CAT5 or better cable to create the adapter cable.

Wiring

The wiring is pretty straight forward. If your adapter only has a single ground, both the transmit and receive ground (pin 4 and 6) on the BVM will be connected to that ground. Each pin is based on the monitor side of the cable.

  • Pin 1, Not connected
  • Pin 2, to RXD-
  • Pin 3, to T/R+
  • Pin 4, to T GND
  • Pin 5, Not connected.
  • Pin 6, to R GND
  • Pin 7, to RXD+
  • Pin 8, to T/R-
  • Pin 9, Not connected
