[GUIDE] Stable Diffusion CPU, CUDA, ROCm with Docker-compose

[UPDATE 28/11/22] I have added support for CPU, CUDA and ROCm. CPU and CUDA is tested and fully working, while ROCm should "work".

Preparing your system

Install docker and docker-compose and make sure docker-compose version 1.72.0 or later is installed.

Then install NVIDIA Container Toolkit or Follow ROCm Docker Quickstart.

For windows, follow CUDA on WSL User Guide then Enabling the Docker Repository and Installing the NVIDIA Container Toolkit

Initial set-up

Create new directory and save the following files.

Building docker image

This will download and install the required packages.

• Using CPU

  docker-compose build stablediff-cpu

• Using CUDA

  docker-compose build stablediff-cuda

• Using ROCm

  docker-compose build stablediff-rocm

Setting up launch parameter

Edit stablediff.env to match your use cases.
You can also add launch parameter such as --lowvram.

• Using CPU

  export COMMANDLINE_ARGS="--listen --no-half --skip-torch-cuda-test"

• Using CUDA

  export COMMANDLINE_ARGS="--listen"

• Using ROCm

  export COMMANDLINE_ARGS="--listen --precision full --no-half"

Initial run

This will create two directory called stablediff-web and stablediff-models.
After initial run, you will get message about missing Stable Diffusion ckpt model.
Grab one and copy it to stablediff-models. in linux, you might need sudo to
do this.

• Using CPU

  docker-compose up stablediff-cpu

• Using CUDA

  docker-compose up stablediff-cuda

• Using ROCm

  docker-compose up stablediff-rocm

Subsequent run

Use the command below every time you want to run Stable Diffusion.

• Using CPU

  docker start -a stablediff-cpu-runner

• Using CUDA

  docker start -a stablediff-cuda-runner

• Using ROCm

  docker start -a stablediff-rocm-runner

Stopping Stable Diffusion

To stop Stable Diffusion press Ctrl + C and use the command below.

• Using CPU

  docker stop stablediff-cpu-runner

• Using CUDA

  docker stop stablediff-cuda-runner

• Using ROCm

  docker stop stablediff-rocm-runner

Testing

I run this using Ubuntu 22.04 with Dual Xeon X5670, 12 GB RAM and Polaris 11 4 GB GPU.
Generating 512x512 image using CPU i get around 17.44s/it using around 8~9 GB RAM.

I also run this using Ubuntu 20.04 with Maxwell 2 GB GPU. Generating 512x512 image,
i get around 5.12s/it.

If you managed to use this method please comment below.
Also this method should work with windows, personally i have not try it but i would like to hear that.

This is stable diffusion web ui wrapped in docker container which is useful is you want to deploy this on a cloud server (GCP AWS). This is also useful if you are in large organization (corporate/university) with shared GPU resources.

Hi @catzy007 , thanks for the images code.
I ran the docker-composer, and it created 3 folders instead of one as it was earlier, so I copied the models and run the docker image without putting any variables into the volumes and path

Now when I am trying to reach the api on "http://127.0.0.1:7860/docs" I can't access it.
Where am I wrong ?

From what i can tell, it seems like you modify the docker-compose or dockerfile. This is completely fine if you know what you're doing. I suggest you follow the guide again using cmd/powershell or adapt your modification to the guide. For reference here is what docker ps -a and docker image ls should look like.

Without being disrespectful i suggest you slowly follow the guide again using CMD/Powershell instead of Docker Desktop and make sure everything is working properly. Then apply your modification to the project afterwards.

I'm failing the CPU build on this part.

EDIT: I removed the +cpu on the requested version install and it went through. I doubt it will work tho. I'm at the step where I added a model now. But it does not recognize safetrensors. Is that correct?

EDIT 2: I used a ckpt model and now it launches. I can't generate images though because I get stuck here:

Can anyone tell me how to increase the ammount of CPU cores used? it allways uses the half of the available cores, 8cores / 4 are used, 16Cores 8 are used and so on.

iam new to docker and dockercompose. is there a way to convert docker-compose.yml to simple dockerfile as i use caprover to manage docker and it cant handel docker-compose.yml.

Used this method to create a CPU runner and it works very well. Only made 2 minor edits to the process.

1: Changed the TORCH_COMMAND in Dockerfile to:

I'm trying to get this working on Windows11 Pro with WSL2 and everything seemed to be going okay other than during the Nvidia CUDA toolkit and drivers installation where the sudo systemctl restart ... commands - under WSL2, systemd is not being used.

However I cannot bring the container up:

Updated progress: I'm a little further along now, having removed the package docker.io and instead installed docker-ce, see https://docs.docker.com/engine/install/ubuntu/ for information on that. At least one of the problems with the Ubuntu docker-io package is that it doesn't provide any support for /etc/init.d type control, just systemd, which doesn't run under WSL2. With that installed, you then use sudo service docker restart to restart the docker daemon, however several of the other things https://docs.nvidia.com/datacenter/cloud-native/container-toolkit/latest/install-guide.html tells you to restart don't seem to have control files in /etc/init.d/.

I'm now getting:

stablediff-runner-cuda exited with code 1

After I copyingsd-v1-5.safetensors into stablediff-models, this is what I get when I try to start the container:

Error response from daemon: No such container: stablediff-cuda-runner

So I'm not quite there yet.

Further update: The command I have to use is docker start -a stablediff-runner-cuda for some reason; with a model in stablediff-models, it still didn't see it:

I copied the model file into stablediff-web/models/Stable-diffusion/ and have issued the docker start -a stablediff-runner-cuda again; I'm waiting for anything on the console; I don't know whether it's hanging or just taking its own sweet time getting going.

I will update as things happen (or don't).

Update: Same result as before; it doesn't see the Stable Diffusion model in either place. Do I need to put it under stablediff-models/Stable-diffusion?

nothing is hanging. the application is running on http://127.0.0.1:7860/. otherwise you need to put the ckpt file in the models directory. please dont confuse the models with the ckpt file. https://huggingface.co/runwayml/stable-diffusion-v1-5/tree/main and
https://huggingface.co/runwayml/stable-diffusion-v1-5/blob/main/v1-5-pruned-emaonly.safetensors

Hi!

This discussion has helped me with figuring out how to get this locally on my machine and I wanted to pass it forward! I'm not too sure if you're still running into this problem, however changing the line in the docker-compose file:
if [ ! -f /stablediff-web/models/Stable-diffusion/*.ckpt ]; then
to
if [ ! -f /stablediff-web/models/Stable-diffusion/*.ckpt ] && [ ! -f /stablediff-web/models/Stable-diffusion/*.safetensors ]; then
should fix it. Since the original script was meant as a check for ckpt files, this should allow for safetensor as well.

excellent article. Thank you !!! This is working really fine. One question only: why does it say that the extensions are disabled . This happens if we fo to the extensions tab and try to install from URL.

I have question
I'm creating my UI with the A1111 API and then after that, I want to push that to production for public use.
The problem is that right now it can only process one image at a time. if user B requests an image then it gets into queues
I want Parallel processing. so that every user can generate an image
