Running via systemd on Linux

Has anyone been able to run webui.sh via a systemd service script on Linux? I've tried and it just hangs at "Launching launch.py..."

It seems like the issue is that launch.py isn't actually being run. Systemd services scare me so instead I would just throw webui.sh into my rc.local and call it a day.

If it has to be through Systemd you could try running "webui-user.sh" with all of the directories set manually(install, python, venv, etc.) to see if that makes a difference. I'd assume that if there was an issue with these things it would output the error message, but I have no idea how systemd handles output from secondary scripts.

I had this problem, too. launch.py is definitely being run (you can see it in systemctl status or ps or whatever).

If you modify the end of webui.sh to put a -u in between "${python_cmd}" and "${LAUNCH_SCRIPT}" it seems to work as expected when systemd launches it.

Thank you! It seems to work now, but I am a little nervous about disabling stdout/stderr buffering. I'll give it a whirl and see if there is any noticeable performance hit.

But this is great, now:

1. The service starts automatically upon reboot.
2. The service runs in the background, without a SSH session.
3. The OS will restart the service automatically if it crashes.
4. And I hope to write a little monit script to automatically restart the service if it detects high VRAM utilization for a long time (i.e. leak). (Something I've run into a lot since moving SD to Ubuntu.)

Ah yes, I had that problem too! 😁

webui.sh tries to load webui-user.sh from the current directory (before it cds to the install location).

If you add a WorkingDirectory=/whatever to the service block it should fix it.

Setting up PYTHONUNBUFFERED="1" env variable make same thing like -u parameter. You don't need to edit webui.sh source

Wrap it all:
Service:

Description=systemd service start stable-diffusion

[Service]
ExecStart=/bin/bash $WORK_DIR/webui.sh --listen --api

WorkingDirectory=$WORK_DIR

And add env to webui-user.sh

I am unable to use the code you provided, I added [Unit] to the beginning of the file, but it still doesn't work.

Perhaps it's an issue with environmental variables?

I had this problem too, and the service only work after removing the WantedBy directive.

I was struggling with this a bit and was writing a post asking for help when it started working. for anyone else who comes across this and might be confused by the back and forth above, here is what I did. This is on Arch.

I created /etc/systemd/system/automatic1111.service with the following content:

Description=Stable Diffusion AUTOMATIC1111 Web UI service
After=network.target
StartLimitIntervalSec=0

[Service]
Type=simple
Restart=always
RestartSec=1
User=ai
ExecStart=/usr/bin/env bash /home/ai/mnt/ai/apps/stable-diffusion/automatic1111/stable-diffusion-webui/webui.sh
WorkingDirectory=/home/ai/mnt/ai/apps/stable-diffusion/automatic1111/stable-diffusion-webui
StandardOutput=append:/var/log/sdwebui.log
StandardError=append:/var/log/sdwebui.log

then ran "systemctl enable automatic1111.service". Then just reboot and check the status with "systemctl status automatic1111.service" to confirm it is running. "cat /var/log/sdwebui.log" seems to show it gets stuck at the following, but the webui launches after a few minutes and seems to be working.

Thanks for the comments on this thread. I had to add the WantedBy clause and also create an empty log file. Here is what that worked for me.

File: /etc/systemd/system/automatic1111.service

[Unit]
Description=Stable Diffusion AUTOMATIC1111 Web UI service
After=network.target
StartLimitIntervalSec=0

[Service]
Type=simple
Restart=always
RestartSec=1
User=user
ExecStart=/usr/bin/env bash /home/user/ai/automatic1111/webui.sh
WorkingDirectory=/home/user/ai/automatic1111
StandardOutput=append:/var/log/sdwebui.log
StandardError=append:/var/log/sdwebui.log

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Note: In my case the user account is simply "user" and path is '/home/user/ai/automatic1111/'. Please adjust this based on your setup.

Add export PYTHONUNBUFFERED="1" to webui-user.sh

Then create the /var/log/sdwebui.log file.
sudo touch /var/log/sdwebui.log

Finally enable the service.
systemctl enable automatic1111.service
