Chess

A classic chess game using phaser and TypeScript


How to Deploy

On the project terminal run:

npm i;
npm run build;
node index

then access on your browser to: localhost:8080

To access a live version running on a server ( the server may take a few seconds to boot, before starting the game )

Structure

The Game is Based in 3 main pillars, the Board class, the Player/Enemy class and all the Pieces class

Pieces

Exists a main class named Piece who got every configuration common to every game Piece. This class is extended in each specific piece. Each Piece got his own logic and is responsible for understanding which possible moves or "eats" is possible to do in the current turn

User/Player/Enemy

The Player class manages the turn logic and piece removable. The Enemy class should be responsible of carrying all the AI necessary to make challenging oposite enemy. Both class are extended by a User abstract class with all similar functions

Board

The Board takes mainly every game manage logic. The map is based in a 2D array of strings representing each position on the board, where an empty string represents a empty Tile and a specific string, like "wk" ( white king ) represents the piece in the current house

Tile

The tile renders his current situation and manages the clicking action of the user

Game History

The history was implemented to help with the debugging development and to give some features for the user to analyse his current situation. This class stores every turn in an array of 2D array and can return any undo or redo action


Development

I started developing this game by creating an 2D array to represent the tile and based on the current index draw the Tile. After, I inserted strings in the array representing each piece and rendered into the game. The player and the enenmy was made with similiar structures but only the player could click the board during his turn. The first piece that I started developing was the pawn, one of the more complex pieces, when clicked the piece must show the possible moves and if clicked in the possible Tile, should move to that position. Then, the history of the game was saved to an array, that way was possible for me to easly debbug each situation. Having that done I started working on the rook with his horizontal and vertical moves, since the main core mechanics of the game were already developed it was easy to figure out the algorith for X and Y movements. After that I developed the bishop with diagonal moves, similar logic. Having the rook and bishop made, I implemented the same similar logic for the king and queen with a few differences, such as king movement restriction of 1 house per turn. When all the piece mechanics were made, I started the Check mechanic that implies the Checkmate mechanic. For each turn, I verify every enemy piece. If the enemy got my king at Check, then I restrict my plays to only the movements that avoid/flee or sacrifice a piece to save the king. If there's no possible movement then is Checkmate and the game ends. Finally implemented some priority on the enemy play. So when exists a possibility of eating a piece of my board, it will choose that, instead of randomly choosing any move.

Future Implementation

The AI is pretty basic, with no consideration for the moves, just relying on the randomly move picks or priority of eating a piece. In the future, it could be implemented a scoring for board pieces and an analysis for future plays before choosing to move a piece The Casteling was not implemented The CheckMate is recognized but it still needs to be polished out Implement an AI-based on an external API
