Miniscope-Wire-Free-DAQ: A small, wearable wire-free data acquisition (DAQ) expansion board (wire-free DAQ, 3.5 g) which adds wire-free capabilities to all generations of coaxial cabled UCLA Miniscopes.

The goal of this Wiki, and the Miniscope project in general, is to help advance and disseminate miniature microscopy technology to the neuroscience community. While the Miniscope platform described here is not an off-the-shelf commercial solution, we have focused on making it as easy as possible for any neuroscience lab to build, use, and modify, requiring no soldering and only simple hands-on assembly. The Miniscope project, Miniscope repositories, and Miniscope.org are ongoing projects and will be routinely updated over the coming months and years.

The wire-free DAQ is battery powered by an on-board, single-cell lithium-polymer battery and records imaging data onto an on-board microSD card. The wire-free DAQ can be mounted directly onto the Miniscopes’ housing or be worn as a backpack. Power, bi-directional configuration commands, and high bandwidth uni-directional imaging data are transmitted between the Miniscopes and wire-free DAQ via a short coaxial cable. Integrated with an IR remote control receiver, the system supports starting, stopping, and pausing recordings remotely with an IR remote control transmitter during experiments.

  • SAME70 microcontroller (MCU)
  • I2C protocol
  • Infrared (IR) control (KIT-14677, SparkFun)
  • SD v2.0 interface
  • Maximum of ~11 MBps write speed
  • Weights 3.5 g

The Miniscope-Wire-Free-DAQ needs to be programmed with the Miniscope-Wire-Free-DAQ firmware which can be found here. All you need to do is make sure the Miniscope-Wire-Free-DAQ firmware is up-to-date with the newest Miniscope-Wire-Free-DAQ Firmware.
