By Kai Nieves & Anna Mestres
Goal: Recreate the route and information online of the Gymkhana for the MDEF Fest.
For the MDEF we want to connect our projects (Anna, Borka & Kai) and show it in an interactive way, since we all work with children and games. So, we have decided to create a Gymkhana, apart from the other activities that will be done, with our toys.
Gymkhana: an equestrian day event comprising races and other competitions on horseback, typically for children.
The idea comes from wanting to connect other people who do not have the opportunity to see or participate in the gymkhana. As well as helping the people who will be present during the day of the activity to understand the instructions of each game, if we are not present or cannot explain it.
We decided to create this digital Gymkhana because we wanted to included people that couldn't join us in the activity of our Gymkhana. Our long term dissemination plan is that this web stays up and can have a link to our personal webs that talk about toys for kids and that they are an open information source for everyone and a educational source too. Somehow showing them that there exist opportunities in how to make toys with trash and where is this information accesible. This tto helped us on how to organize activities that can include people in different places, not just the in-person one and it shows very pratically how things would be in real life, so they can have the total experience.
- Materials and Digital Fabrication
- Brainstorming
- Test 1
- Drawing the Posters
- Designing the Posters
- Pictures 360
- First interaction with the website
- Add Video
- Final Design
In order to develop the online interaction we need the physical interaction first. And then we need to create the online circuit.
Physical Interaction
- 6 Physical Games
- Ply wood (600 x 300 x 0.5 mm)
Digital Interaction
- Camera Insta360 One X (Josep has lent it to us)
The Digital Fabrication that we use are:
- Laser cut (Trotec Speedy 400)
- Rhino (Rhino 5 is the version to keep the files for make work the laser machine)
- Illustrator (Inskcape it's open resource it could be used too)
- Marzipano
- Atom
We wanted to make a balanced circuit between the different types of play. We also wanted to think about where we could do the online interaction. Since the physical location has not been decided yet. So we have decided on a place for each game, which is related to its story and function.
The games we are going to present will be:
Order | Game | Location | Author |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Anilla(s) | Bike Parking IAAC | George, Kai & Anna |
2 | Pintat | Butterfly Park | Kai |
3 | Modular Furniture | IAAC Roof | Anna |
4 | Crosshabit | SuperIlla | Borka |
5 | La Diana | Street | George, Kai & Anna |
6 | Forest Game | Park | Anna |
For test 1, Josep gave us a 360• camera that we had to test to see if it worked for the things that we were imagining. We test it at
We then tried to upload the image to check that everything was working correctly and to have a first taste of the website.
For the posters, Kai made some drawings in the ipad and after it they edited it in illsutrator. We decided to do this posters to use them as an indicator in the in-person Gymkhana for the MDEFest. The drawings are very childish so kids can understand it better and can play.
We laser cut the drawings that we made on illustrator and cut them into 25cm x 25 cm piece of wood.
We took 360• pictures of the games we are using for the Gymkhana. See below: The aniilas game: Is a throwing rings into the sticks of the toy. Crosshabit: Imagining cities for all of us by building with construction parts. Forest Game: A build up game with natural materials. La Diana: Throwing stones to the target. Modular Furniture: Building furniture game that you can stand on it.
Building up a website that we didn't knew about it was very interesting. At first, when we try it, we uploaded pictures that weren't with the properties that the website asked and it didn't work. We started using the 360• camera.
We modified de website by coding and JavaScript, changing the colours and the format of it. We did an error taking the pictures that we noticed when we uploaded it on the website. We took a picture of ourselves to put it and one of our classmates was in it clearly smoking. we don't mind but since we are working with parents and kids, instead of deleting the picture and taking another one, we cover it by drawing on it. Sorry, Nikkita! At the end, the page looks great!
Our idea was to implement, apart from the information and guide arrows, some help videos to understand the different games. For this we discovered that in Marzipano's demos there is a repository where he creates a frame with videos linked to youtube. The repository is called embedded hotspot, and here you can find the repository of it.
We tried to implement it with Santi and Xavi, but it was impossible. We changed the code and tried to modify from other repositories, but it was impossible. We deduced that the error was based on the initial JavaScript that is automatically developed by the Marzipano tool.
Then Xavi discovered this website that uses Marzipano's tool and implements videos in different spaces and also different images with links. Which is more than what we want to do.
We tried with Pietro to implement the functions of the code that allowed us to place a video, but it didn't work.
There would be the option of trying to do the process in reverse, as Xavi says. Clone his code that works and change the images and information with ours. But at the same time we know that it is not essential. So we will value the time we have and the work, and with that we will try to implement it.
This is the website of The Gymkhana.
