Now that 1.2 is released it's time to start thinking about 1.3.

There have been some suggestions for major UI improvements. Some visible, some under the covers. I think it would make sense to think through all the GUI related features and changes we want and try to make them all work well together.

Some thoughts on improvements:

I bet there are some other good thoughts on what could be done.

We should think hard about any changes to how we interact with the app, how these features would change them and how they could all work together.

Couple options

  • Better search ? At the moment the search is tied to listing all the podcasts first. I think that it would be nice if there was a better search integration.
  • Custom export folder. Right now the opml is exported to the data folder. It would be nice if there is a way to choose another folder.
  • Right now all the listened and unlisted or marked or skipped etc are all same color and fonts. It would be nice if we could differentiate those.
  • Skipping an episode and marking as listened should be separate things in APod.

I will come up with more later.

I am addicted to APod, I hope the development continues. I am no coder so I cant help out with the coding stuff.

cheers

Maybe have another look at #615 ( Make 'Add to Queue' more visible in All Episodes ), which was put on hold because it was a major change with side effects.
Anyway I'm very happy with the app as it is now, but willing to know if someone has a good idea.

I love Antenna, the one thing that is missing for me is auto download. Yes I know it exist but we can't filter what we want to download, it's either all or nothing.
I have feeds with recap and full episodes (specified in title) and auto download would download both. (See related issue #531)

One thing I would like is Chromecast. I think it makes sense now with cast audio http://www.google.com/cast/audio/

Also, synchronization between devices

I do a lot of my podcast listening while riding to university on a bicycle, which means wind and traffic often make it hard to hear the podcasts. The obvious solution is to turn the volume up, but some podcasts are so much louder than others that going from one to the other becomes jarring. Some setting or automatic feature that normalises all the audio would be great.

Other suggestions:

  • Auto sort, now it just adds them as they are downloaded, I'd like them to always go in the order I chose.
  • Related, assigning priorities to each podcast so that you can sort them by priority, or let them be added to different queues. Not all podcasts are created equal

The possibility to speed up or slow down the speed of podcasts would be great. Like with the HTML5-Player on Youtube. Maybe x0.7, x0.8, x0.9.....up to x2.0.

Thank you. I totally missed that. Unfortunately my version of Android seems to not support Prestissimo. One more reason to finally upgrade.

Edit: Any suggestions which might work in Android 2.3.7 ?

Please see #960 (Add
Feed-specific 'Delete After Playback' override option).

I like the way the now playing screen in Spotify looks. It uses a the blurred cover as background.

The show notes could be accessed by swiping up, i.e. that the cover disappears with a parallax effect similar to the way Google play pages look.

Or maybe extract the primary color of a cover and use that for ui elements, since Material design favors a rather flat look.

A black theme for AMOLED screens is something I always want across all of my apps.

There is a dark theme.

@Alexander-Wilms I've been thinking about exactly that kind of setup for the player. Parallax cover, swiping up for notes. Time to implement is the only barrier...

I would love to work on chrome cast support and "Now playing" screen. In fact, I have tried integrating chrome cast option in the app with basic view.

Right now I have no way of easily bookmarking the very best and most important podcast episodes I listen to for later reference. This is the one thing I miss the most in AntennaPod. Therefore my biggest wish for 1.3 is to solve issue #538. Thank you for your great work!

There should be some better homescreen widgets. A small 1x1 widget with play / pause and open app functionality would be welcome. And the widgets should have a (configurable) transparent background. The grey one is somewhat ugly.

I do have a suggestion. When pressing the back button on the main view, AntennePod quits. Other apps, e.g. owncloud Newsreader open the sidebar instead and quit after pressing back a second time.

It would be great if you could display some statistics about the current makeup of the queue. For example:

-Total duration / size (of all items in queue)
-Average duration / size
-Median duration / size
-Number of items within a certain duration / size (under 5 min, between 5 and 10 min....and so on - maybe displayed as a histogram, the same thing with size)

Total duration / size (of all items in queue)

+1 Would be very helpful before long travels to answer the simple question: "Do I have enough?". Even only rounded to full hours and without taking playback speed into account.

Just created a pull request for a commit that shows number of episodes and total duration in the queue view: #1020
Suggestions welcome

One thing I miss from old antennapod release is time played display in mini player view (you must enter full player view to have it) and/or live update of time played in queue.

@GITlex

GITlex commented Jul 22, 2015

Is it possible to put the items in the queue into a random order? That would be nice.

Edit:
A combined sorting mechanism for the queue (first by podcast URL and then by date) would be great.

Ok, we're getting ready to release 1.3. If anyone isn't in the alpha test and would like to check it out please check here for how to do so: https://github.com/AntennaPod/AntennaPod#alpha-testing

Unfortunately we weren't able to get to a lot of these features. As it happens we had a lot of bug and usability fixes that took up a lot of our time and mean that it's probably better to get what we have out now and work on the rest later. We'll keep this issue open to track things for the next version though. Apart from those items I mentioned at the top we were able to address some of the ideas presented here (and some of you actually implemented those changes yourself!). Namely, those by: @udif, @GITlex, and @mase76.

The rest of these are pretty good ideas but can take a lot of time or thought on how to implement them. The material design renovation itself will be a lot of work and some of the UI changes may be put on hold until that is finished.

Anyways, let us know how the current 1.3 release is going, focusing on any crashes or strange behavior.

Thanks!

We don't actually manage the F-Droid setup. So, I'm not sure that's something we can do. They just pull whenever we tag a new release.

Closing this. Most things have been resolved or have their own issues. Anything that doesn't (that people still care about) should have a new issue created. Thanks for all the input!
