Detailed Schedule for Astro Hack Week 2017 (Aug 28 - Sep 1)

Here are more details about the schedule for Astro Hack Week. Please be aware that some details might still evolve until the start of the workshop.

Doors open daily at 9:00am sharp. Food and drink are not allowed in the UW classroom, so please plan for breakfast on your own before 9am. We will serve coffee each day during breaks at 10:30am, and will provide lunch daily (except Wednesday) at 12:30pm. An evening reception open to the local astronomy and hacking community with drinks and light snacks will be held on Monday evening, and we will provide pizza for dinner on Wednesday at Galvanize. Any snacks and meals not mentioned are on your own.

Sunday Aug 27 (optional)

  • 7:00pm for anybody already in town: informal gathering at the District Lounge at Hotel Deca, just a short walk from campus.

Monday Aug 28

  • 9:00: Doors open & registration
  • 9:10: Welcome (by OC) + quick intros (name, what to teach + what to learn)
  • 9:30-10:30: Machine Learning (by David Hogg and Adrian Price-Whelan)
  • Coffee break
  • 11:00-12:30: Machine Learning continued
  • Lunch
  • 1:30-2:00: Hack pitches
  • 2:00-6:00: Breakout sessions TBD, open hacking
  • Evening: Reception at UW eScience

Tuesday Aug 29

  • 9:00-10:30: Bayesian Statistics (by Jake VanderPlas + Boris Leistedt)
  • Coffee Break
  • 11:00-11:30: Bayesian Statistics continued
  • 11:30-12:30: Google Cloud Platform introduction (by Amy Unruh)
  • Lunch
  • 1:30-6:00: 45 min breakout session on Google Cloud Platform (Amy Unruh), open hacking

Wednesday Aug 30

  • 9:00-10:30: Building and contributing to open source software projects (by Erik Tollerud and Brigitta Sipocz)
  • Coffee break
  • 11:00-11:30: Open source software projects continued
  • 11:30-11:35: Intro to community hacking (Meredith Rawls and Sarah Tuttle)
  • Lunch on your own as we move to Galvanize in Pioneer Square
  • 1:00-6:00: Community hacking at Galvanize (begin with pitches)
  • Evening: pizza dinner
  • 7:00pm: public talk at Galvanize (speaker: Lauren Anderson)

Thursday Aug 31

  • 9:00-10:30: Data visualization (by Daniela Huppenkothen and James Davenport)
  • Coffee break
  • 11:00-12:30: Data visualization continued
  • Lunch
  • 1:30-6:00: 45 min breakout session on TensorFlow (Amy Unruh), open hacking

Friday Sep 1

  • 9:00 - 4:30: Open hacking all day - finish the things you haven’t finished yet!
  • 4:30 - 6:00: Hack show-and-tell: present a slide in our communal Google Slides presentation about your accomplishments during the week
