in line with the updated git & GitHub defaults the master branch should be renamed to main

(also applies to other weldx repositories)

we can also rename it soon (e.g. tomorrow) and see what fails since currently there is no near term release or similar in the pipeline

what do you think @marscher ?

It should be renamed due to political reasons, right? Honestly I think it would make a difference for repositories like NumPy or so, which is used by thousands of users. In case of weldx, which is being cloned by less than 10 people, I do not believe it is worth the effort.
In practice I've noticed, that all working copies need to be updated too, so the rename takes full effect.

I think using main is now the de-factor default git branch nomenclature so it would make sense to follow that just to avoid confusion

This is for no reason a technical debate. For new repos it is now the default name. But default branches can be named arbitrarily. The default branch is being checked out after a clone.

The confusion arises from renaming a long standing de-facto standard (the unspeakable branch) to something new. I have a large mixture of repos with different patterns now, confusing me every time. But I guess this is a small price to pay for more equality rights, right?

The reason I am bringing this up is that I would like to have a consistent naming/branching schema for weldx related repos, which I do consider a technical issue. Most of them have main as the default branch name as of now and I expect the same for future repositories. This is unrelated to other projects or political issues, I simply would like to have consistency in this namespace and think that using main here is the easier way to achieve this
