Welcome to the Proof-of-Individuality wiki!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

How many people will be able to use POI at the MVP stage?

During the pseudonym event, which lasts 15 minutes, a couple of transactions per user have to be processed, and since Ethereum only does 15-30 transactions per second, the MVP can only support roughly 1000-3000 users.

New innovations which are being actively funded and developed, such as state channels (off-chain transactions), and infrastructure like Plasma.io, or even new "world computers" like BitLattice, could support billions of users.

In what way is POI a replacement for biometric ID's?

POI and Virtual Pseudonym Parties is behavioural biometrics, whereas DNA, fingerprints, iris scans or facial scans is static biometrics.

The "nyms" in the pseudonym parties verify one another, and that they are not doing another party simultaneously, and since all pseudonym parties happen at the exact same time, that is a proof-of-individuality.

The pseudonym event happens once a month, and each month gives you a new POI, on a new private key, which is not traceable to your previous POI, and so POIs are entirely pseudo-anonymous.

When you say "nyms" - what do you mean? Can you please explain more in detail what it is?

A "nym" is the word we use to describe a human individual.

Each and every one of us contains an indefinite amount of possibilities, each of such able potentially to develop an ‘I’ that is consistent coherent and interesting. Each of which has or may have a name or a ‘Nym’, as the case may be. -Wildcat2030

A NYM point is an ephemeral cryptographic token on Ethereum, just as POIs.They're solely used in the pseudonymous party, and then immediately discarded after the POI party ends.

How will the video verification hangouts be organised?

With a smart contract on Ethereum. Each user has to register each month, and put in a deposit (an "anti bot deposit"), which they get back after the event. The smart contract then pairs all users (potentially 3 billion and more) into groups, by random, and gives each group a video hangout address (like appear.in/your_pseudonym_party_address), and the users then join their party, and hand out NYM points to the other users, over a period of 15 minutes.

The NYM points are to defend against bots, and balanced so that 3 nyms win over 2 nyms, so to attack the Virtual Pseudonym Parties network with bots, for every group where bots had a majority, there would be lots of groups where they only had 1 or 2 nyms. The deposit (anti-bot deposit) is lost of not verified, making it costly to bot attack the POI network.
