eq_Taux_sea_cycle: zonal structure of the amplitude of the mean seasonal cycle of Taux in the equatorial Pacific

Description:

Computes the zonal root mean square error (RMSE) of of equatorial Pacific (150°E-90°W) amplitude (standard deviation) of the mean annual cycle (zonal 5°S-5°N average) zonal wind stress (Taux) between model and observations (the time averaging creates a 12 months mean annual cycle time series from which the standard deviation is computed)

equatorial Pacific

Regridding:

model and observations regridded toward a generic 1°x1° grid (using cdms esmf linear method)

Steps (computation):

  • detrending (if applicable)
  • mean annual cycle computation
  • standard deviation computation
  • regridding (if applicable)
  • meridional average
  • RMSE computation

Time frequency:

monthly

Units:

10-3 N/m2

Variable name:

zonal wind stress (Taux)

Dive down Level 1:

The first level shows the diagnostic used to compute the metric and highlight the main differences between the model and the reference Figure 1: bias in the zonal structure of the amplitude of the mean seasonal cycle of zonal wind stress (Taux) in the equatorial Pacific (5°S-5°N averaged). The black and blue curves show respectively the reference and the model. The metric derived is the zonal RMSE between the model curve and the reference curve

Dive down Level 2:

The second level shows the broader picture to better understand the spatial pattern of the bias: the map of the amplitude of the mean seasonal cycle in the equatorial Pacific Figure 2: bias of the amplitude of the mean seasonal cycle of zonal wind stress (Taux) in the equatorial Pacific. The left and right maps show respectively the reference and the model

Dive down Level 3:

The third level shows the zonal structure of the mean seasonal cycle in a Hovmöller diagram Figure 3: zonal structure of the mean seasonal cycle of zonal wind stress (Taux) in the equatorial Pacific (5°S-5°N averaged). The left and right maps show respectively the reference and the model
