Design team +1'd the darker grey from the Ambiance RW theme, so we need a merge proposal to land that in to Ambiance in LP.

@8none1 happy with dark theme of Nautilus sidebar style from Ambiance RW.

But we would like to make one update to the opacity of the launcher sidebar. I have added a design spec under Launcher sidebar here in Code for reference. @Luxamman @madsrh

(Reopening because the specced changes haven’t been made yet.)

After posting some comments about this on the Ubuntu community site, I was directed here.

Basically, I think the current implementation (from the PPA) the nautilus sidebar has the following issues:

  1. The look makes it appear as if the icon is separate from the text, which it is not. i.e. it looks as if the text labels are sub-items of the selected icon.
  2. As only the text portion reacts to hover, it gives a laggy feel - as in the text hovers, but the icon is only selected later. Very odd.
  3. Because it is a similar shade to the headerbar, it gives the impression you can drag the window by this, which you can’t.
  4. The dark shade also makes the ‘eject’ buttons from removable media really standout.

The version posted in the screenshot above looks much nicer; the icon and text are joined, and the colour is not too dark.

This won’t be fixed, since Ubuntu no longer ships Ambiance and Radiance.
