How to develop without playground?

I like this project and I try to make something out of it. My question is how do I develop outside of playground? For instance, I want to edit my Lexer and Parser in VS Code but at the same time I want commands that will generate diagram and output.

If I know how, I might write and VS Code extension that will create preview and show diagram or output.

I accidentally clicked a link and lost all my changed in playground. That is why I want to start building parser in VS Code but be able to check diagram and output constantly during development.

The playground was never meant for productive use, just small "games"...

Regarding a template for a "local-playground + diagrams"

There does seem to be a lack here.
There is a very old example of using the diagrams locally:

• https://github.com/Chevrotain/chevrotain/tree/master/examples/parser/diagrams

But this is without its own package.json and relevant npm scripts

So this is definitively something that could be contributed to the examples folder, e.g:

• in examples/playground folder
• package.json file with scripts for:
  • Generating Diagrams.
  • Validating Grammar.
  • Running input --> output flow (without a test library).

Are you interested in trying to contribute this?

Regarding a VSCode

This is significantly more complex, but could also provide great value, such an extension could:

• display the diagrams in a webview
• potentially link from the diagrams back to the relevant source code.
• Show Grammar validation errors on the relevant source code.
• ...

This would be an interesting project, just not one I have the time for right now ;)

That does not look like a complicated task, although there should be an standard way to develop grammar. ш mean standard output, so every grammar is a plugin and we can connect any of then with the same interface. Right now, you use jQuery style self executing function but I think standard import\export model should be used.

I'm not a 100% sure I would like such an extension as part of the official Chevrotain repo.
Mostly due to concerns about total cost of ownership as I'm trying to reduce the maintenance burden.
But you could start with a prototype in a separate repo, and if the result is simple / small enough we
can then evaluate merging it into the main Chevrotain mono-repo vs linking to it in the README.md.

Such a template would indeed not be complicated, I may attempt to create one in the near future.
I would not base this "local" playground on the online playground, not only are we dealing with different scenarios
(regular IDE vs hacked web ide).
