As I reported on Phabricator, linking modules with ld.lld when CONFIG_ARM64_MODULE_PLTS is enabled is now broken:

$ make -skj"$(nproc)" ARCH=arm64 LLVM=1 mrproper defconfig all
...
ld.lld: error: section type mismatch for .plt
>>> <internal>:(.plt): SHT_PROGBITS
>>> output section .plt: SHT_NOBITS
...

The following change was suggested on Phabricator, which builds, but I am not sure what the runtime implications of this are.

I requested the removal of this error until the kernel can be fully patched so that groups like LKFT and 0day do not get bitten by this: https://reviews.llvm.org/D118840#3332118

Yes, I think a warning would be fine. Groups might still notice but I think it is better than outright breaking the build and we will still push forward with your patch or @ardbiesheuvel's suggestion to get it cleaned up.

Making a (NOLOAD) section SHT_PROGBITS is fishy (the user may expect all-zero
content, but the linker does not check that), but some projects (e.g. Linux
kernel ClangBuiltLinux/linux#1597) traditionally rely
on the behavior. Issue a warning to not break them.

Thank you a lot for the compromise and sending the fixes! We'll make sure they get picked up and backported, hopefully in a timely manner.

commit 4013e26 ("arm64: module: remove (NOLOAD) from linker script")
is now in 5.18-rc1 (when rc1 gets tagged).

So just waiting on the riscv change to hit mainline before closing (though maybe we'll need backports).

On ELF, (NOLOAD) sets the section type to SHT_NOBITS[1]. It is conceptually
inappropriate for .plt, .got, and .got.plt sections which are always
SHT_PROGBITS.

In GNU ld, if PLT entries are needed, .plt will be SHT_PROGBITS anyway
and (NOLOAD) will be essentially ignored. In ld.lld, since
https://reviews.llvm.org/D118840 ("[ELF] Support (TYPE=<value>) to

commit 785a53373c22e3b75afcaffb99cbc9484dae9276
bugzilla: https://gitee.com/openeuler/kernel/issues/I574AL

--------------------------------

commit 60210a3 upstream.

In ld.lld, since
https://reviews.llvm.org/D118840 ("[ELF] Support (TYPE=<value>) to
customize the output section type"), ld.lld will report a `section type
mismatch` error (later changed to a warning). Just remove (NOLOAD) to
fix the warning.

[1] https://lld.llvm.org/ELF/linker_script.html As of today, "The
section should be marked as not loadable" on
https://sourceware.org/binutils/docs/ld/Output-Section-Type.html is
outdated for ELF.

Making a (NOLOAD) section SHT_PROGBITS is fishy (the user may expect all-zero
content, but the linker does not check that), but some projects (e.g. Linux
kernel ClangBuiltLinux/linux#1597) traditionally rely
on the behavior. Issue a warning to not break them.

SHT_PROGBITS.

In GNU ld, if PLT entries are needed, .plt will be SHT_PROGBITS anyway
and (NOLOAD) will be essentially ignored. In ld.lld, since
https://reviews.llvm.org/D118840 ("[ELF] Support (TYPE=<value>) to
customize the output section type"), ld.lld will report a `section type
mismatch` error (later changed to a warning). Just remove (NOLOAD) to
fix the warning.

[1] https://lld.llvm.org/ELF/linker_script.html As of today, "The
section should be marked as not loadable" on
https://sourceware.org/binutils/docs/ld/Output-Section-Type.html is
outdated for ELF.

On ELF, (NOLOAD) sets the section type to SHT_NOBITS[1]. It is conceptually
inappropriate for .plt, .got, and .got.plt sections which are always
SHT_PROGBITS.
