uMlando Wallet UI Design

umlando

uMlando Wallet is a bitcoin wallet for Android built to showcase the Lightning Dev Kit and the Bitcoin Dev Kit. With uMlando, users can send on-chain bitcoin, open a lightning channel, and send/receive bitcoin over lightning.

Expected Outcome

At a high level: lightning can sometimes be complicated. Let's find a way to make this technology more accessible to everyone.

Specifically: the goal of this project is to create a UI design that (if implemented) would help the user onboard to this wallet, backup their wallet, send bitcoin, and receive bitcoin. Furthermore, the figma design should be detailed enough to where it can be passed on to an engineer for implementation.

The user journey can be described as follows:

  • User downloads uMlando
  • Setup a new wallet
  • Fund the wallet
    • Send on-chain bitcoin
  • Backup the wallet
  • Open a lightning channel
    • Determine best way to present this process to the user
  • See lightning channel statuses
  • See lightning peers
  • Check wallet balance
  • Send bitcoin
  • Receive bitcoin
  • Restore the wallet from a backup

Difficulty

This project is a full-time project. The student should have some basic aptitude with design and prototyping software like Figma and some general design training or experience.

The student and mentor will also be in communication with the uMlando developers throughout the design process.

Resources

For an example of what types of stuff to expect during this project, see the Bitcoin Design Guide daily spending wallet and the Padawan wallet design from last year's Summer of Bitcoin.

The Project looks interesting, would love to know more about the wallet TA and some preliminary brand identity.

umlando-update

Hello, this is an update on the uMlando Wallet project for Summer of Bitcoin.

First off, Conor and I have received an outpouring of interest from students in this project. Thank you! It is humbling that so many of you would like to work with us. I am posting this because I have had trouble responding to everyone. I am sorry for that; unfortunately, I don’t always have the ability to respond to every request to review a proposal. I felt that it would be helpful for all students if I provided some criteria.

Acceptance Criteria

This Summer of Bitcoin project is to build a UI for uMlando wallet in Figma. The projects specs are described here: #38

What am I proposing?

You do not need to come up with a creative project idea; your proposal is “I would like to work on this issue”.

What information should I include in my proposal?

For this project, your proposal is more like a resume.

  • Provide links to your design portfolio or projects you have worked on
  • Talk about your experience:
    • What are you studying in school?
    • Have you used Figma before?
      • Or other design software?
    • Have you worked on any design projects before?
      • Internships?
      • Volunteer work?
      • Projects for fun?
        • A poster for your friend’s rock band counts 😉
  • And finally, let us know why you are personally interested in bitcoin and open source

How will we choose a student?

Speaking with Conor or myself beforehand does not increase your chances of being selected. It does not help or harm your chances.

The student we choose will:

  • Be interested in bitcoin
  • Have experience with Figma, or similar design software
  • Have a good “eye for design”
  • Be collaborative in nature
  • Be able to communicate well

I hope that’s helpful for all Summer of Bitcoin applicants. Thanks again for your interest in this project!
