Global warming

In recent decade, climate change became a topic of many political and social conversations. The principle of global warming have been discussed a lot and public reactions to its effects is significantly increasing specially in social media. This project will discuss the social aspects of global warming by observing the users tweets in twitter including #globalwarming. Gathering information about the number of tweets in different states, the political party of each state and the popularity of tweets will provide us with informations we can use to analyze the social reaction to global warming.

The data needed for this project where gathered from the available API from Twitter using Python and JSON (Python codes are availabe here). The tweets are collected from a 100 mi circular area of the state capitals across the US. The following map shows the tweets area for the current study.

This data contains the coordinates of all the state capitals within the range of 100 mi in a circular area following with user id, date, text, favorite tweets number, state and the political party of the state, you can see as follows:

The provided plots will show the followings:

  • The correlation between the number of tweets in each state and the political party of the state. Blue and red bars are corresponding to democratic and republican states respectively

  • The frequency of tweets in different days of the week. The focus was on this particular days because of the unexpected weather condition
