Comparative Genomics

Overview

EYS is a recently discovered protein and is not fully understood. This task involves trying to better estimate the properties of EYS by comparing it to related, but more well understood, genes like perlecan and agrin. It would also be useful to compare EYS's alternate splicings to one another to see how significantly they may differ in function. Finally, comparing human EYS to zebrafish EYS and fruit fly EYS would also be helpful. This task will involve some programming to calculate the Levenshtein edit distances between EYS and its related genes.

Desired final product

A list of potential protein-protein interactions that EYS is involved in, as well as any roles of EYS in cell signalling or regulation. Each of these proposed interactions should be given some kind of justification.

Resources

As background, here are Wikipedia articles for agrin, perlecan, and alternative splicing. The gene for EYS can be downloaded from here. There are also multiple open source software libraries for doing this, so take your pick for which one you prefer depending on what language you are using.
