Blank settings.json file

Users are starting to see their settings,json file get blanked out. This causes the client to stop communicating with the server.

Current idea is that a well crafted payload from the server may be capable of bypassing the client's data integrity checks and then override the settings file.

Pinging @mastacontrola on this issue as 0.11.5 is fairly old but this bug just started popping up.

New bug reports of this issue suggest it is triggered when the host OS crashes. Indicating the file write of settings.json is not yet complete.
