Visit the site.

Overview

Thank you for stopping by, and welcome! This repository demonstrates landing page templates I created based on mock ups from Frontend Mentor. The templates extend the twentytwenty wordpress theme by incorporating CSS frameworks and preprocessors, JavaScript, PHP, and HTML.

Getting Started

Adding Child Theme to WordPress

  • Download the .zip file of this repo
  • In the WordPress (WP) dashboard, install the twentytwenty theme
  • Then, navigate to Appearance -> Themes -> Add New -> Upload Theme and upload the wordpress-theme-child.zip file
  • Activate the child theme to see the templates

Local Installation

  • Have a local or global installation of Node.js
  • Download, clone, or fork this repo to your local environment
  • Navigate to the folder via CLI or terminal and type npm install to install dependencies

To auto-compile Sass:

  • In the package.json file, add the following code to your scripts block
"sass": "node-sass -w src/scss/App.scss -o src --recursive"
  • In the terminal, type npm run sass to start watching the sass file

What I Learned From Working On...

The Landing Page Template

  • How to capture and utilize data from Advanced Custom Fields to populate a template
  • How to use conditionals in PHP to load content
  • PHP has really great documentation
  • Basically, how to set up a WordPress site
The Gallery Template

  • The purpose of a child theme in WordPress and how to create one
  • The importance of uniform styling when naming classes, file names, etc.
  • That you can incorporate JS and PHP if done correctly
  • How to override CSS stylesheets with wp_enqueue_style() and selector specificity
Sunny Landing Page Template

  • How to write useful and descriptive code for troubleshooting purposes
  • If vw is 100% and I add padding to elements along the edge, I get an annoying hortizontal scrollbar. I'm sure there's many reasons for the scrollbar appearing, but this was what caused it for me.
  • That a psuedoelement is a pretty cool way to add a style component to the page
  • How to use SVG fill:color and viewbox properties
  • PLEASE don't be like me and forget to transpile scss then wonder why they website isn't updating
E-Commerce Shopping Page Template

  • How to create custom scss to override the pre-existing bootstrap framework.
  • Even being just one pixel off is hugely obvious!
  • Borders take up space when using the hover effect, causing the images to shrink in size. I learned two different methods to prevent the image from being changing shape on hover.
Swervy Landing Page Template

  • How to use SVG paths and fill to create curved borders.
  • I got a nice intro to CSS grids and flexbox. While they weren't used to their max potential, I have a better understanding of the concepts nonetheless.

Big thank you to HeyItsRocky for all of the feedback, support, and patience!
