The original repo was configured for Tensorflow <2.0, however older versions of tensorflow may not be compatible with new hardware, in particular machines running on Apple silicon. Updating the tensorflow API, as well as re-implementing dropped functions, to make this repo compatible with Tensorflow 2.0
