More control over various parameters

There are a number of places in Gadfly where it tries hard to do something reasonable automatically but for which there's not a very convenient way to override the automatic defaults.

These include:

• Ranges on continuous color scales. (See: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/julia-users/j99rhRHEZiU)
• Ranges in the x/y scales. (See Enhancements for biologists  #103)
• Grid line placement.
• Formatting of numbers (i.e. wether to use scientific notation or not).
• 1d and 2d histogram binning. (See Enhancements for biologists  #103)
• Order of factors in discrete scales.

There are probably other things I haven't thought of.

Is any of this a fault of the built-in range types, or is this more of a library design issue? I feel like ranges need some work in the language (e.g. JuliaLang/julia#2333) and I'd like to collect problematic use cases for an overhaul.

I think these are all things I just neglected, not anything to do with Range issues.
